IT’S THE STEEL THING

Here’s our latest mix, a selection of songs featuring “God’s own instrument” (© John Peel) the pedal steel guitar. Some are obvious (Mojave 3, Beachwood Sparks), others less so (Mogwai, Felt, The Charlatans).

There’s also a version of ‘When You Sleep’ from Japancakes’ track-for-track cover of ‘Loveless’, derided by many as muzak, but which is actually beautiful and makes you have a whole new appreciation of the original. In fact, we loved it so much we released a 7″ single of remixes from it, but that’s another story.

Yes, the pedal steel is an amazing instrument, its melancholy sound perfectly suited to shoegazey indie-pop. Can anyone think of any other tracks we should have included in the mix?
