bdrmm’s new single ‘A Reason To Celebrate’ is out today (Friday, May 8). It’s available on all streaming services and to purchase from Bandcamp.
It is the second single from the Hull/Leeds five-piece’s eagerly anticipated debut album, Bedroom, which will be released on July 3.
Recorded in Leeds by Alex Greaves (Working Men’s Club, Bo Ningen) and mastered in Brooklyn by Heba Kadry (Slowdive, Beach House) it is a real marker of the band’s newfound maturity. Slower than the frenetic post-punk of previous single ‘Happy’, it is reminiscent of the Pale Saints, or Ride circa Nowhere. After a minute and a half it bursts into life with a coda that can only be described as anthemic: more skyscraping than shoegazing.
“This is our ode to the genre, I think,” explains frontman Ryan Smith. “We wanted to make a proper shoegaze song. When we finished recording it, I think we were all a little overwhelmed – this was the music that we always wanted to make.
“The lyrics come from a place of realisation and understanding. It’s a battle between what you want and what you need to do. It’s about proudly, yet stupidly, letting go – and the voice in your head giving you all the different reasons why you should. I love this track; it’s a personal favourite. When we play it live, we never want to stop.”
