This week’s Running Shoes mix has been put together by our long-suffering designer, Marc Jones. Not only is he a design genius (check out his online store and buy some of his incredible prints), but he’s also a top runner who helped me keep the faith since I started the Couch to 5k.
“I started running the February after turning 40,” explains Marc. “It was an unwelcoming time to be outdoors, but far enough away from the post-Christmas period for me to convince myself this would be more than a half-hearted New Year’s resolution.
“I’d never been sporty, but for a while had felt an urge to do something active and couldn’t see myself ever really committing to go to a gym. I bought some running shoes – although I had no idea what would be best and couldn’t face going into a shop to ask for advice – downloaded a Couch to 5k app and away I went.
“Well, not quite. At first, I found it unbelievably hard to run for even a minute. And I started to become so fixated on my breathing that I began to feel I was forgetting how to even do that. But I stuck at it and eight years later, I’m still out regularly.
“During lockdown, it has helped keep me positive and I’ve been going out nice and early every day – before the parks and streets fill up with the daytime wanderers lockdown has created.
“Shoegaze is pretty antithetical to any kind of exercise, so this playlist is the kind of thing I want to listen to – largely electronic, repetitive, propulsive, energising.”
