The first widely available solo release from elusive New York singer-songwriter Cheval Sombre in over eight years is out now. ‘It’s Not Time’ sees him back with long-term collaborator Sonic Boom for a beautiful, brief unravelling of surrender, foresight, praise, longing, acceptance.
As Cheval Sombre (aka Chris Porpora) himself puts it: “Ever know something in your heart before it happens? No one else may see it – but you sense just how things will go? Life parades by in all of its drama, but the truth remains timeless, untouched.”
Buy or listen to the song now on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music and all other digital platforms. Watch Chris Tomsett’s stunning video above.
‘It’s Not Time’ – which was initially shared yesterday by Brooklyn Vegan – is Cheval Sombre’s first release since his collaboration with Dean Wareham in 2018. It is the first glimpse of two new albums he is readying for release in 2021. There’s a hint of serendipity that, as he enters his most prolific period, the world has actually slowed down to Cheval Sombre’s pace; these are no lockdown records, but they will be the perfect soundtrack.
“I’d been working at my own pace on something, well, vast,” he explains. “Earlier this year I asked Sonic Cathedral if they’d be up for an audacious release – shooting for the stars as they say. When ‘It’s Not Time’ was chosen as the first hint, it felt like a perfect torchbearer. As always, may it bring sanctuary – a little refuge. Much more to come.”
