Earlier this evening (March 3), we hosted The Social’s daily after-work drinks on Twitter and we made a tape (OK, put together this mix) of songs from 1991 to soundtrack it. You can read the Twitter thread here and the full tracklisting below.
1991 was The Year Shoegaze Broke and all year we’re updating a running blog commemorating the 30th anniversary of the great things that happened that year, which you can read here.
But, it wasn’t just about shoegaze. In 1991 I had just turned 18, and the world was my oyster. Except I was stuck in the cultural desert of North Devon with just a few record shops and the music press to keep me sane…
Now, 30 years later, I’m stuck in Northwest London and there’s not much point in looking forward, so I’ve been looking back; re-reading the music press, re-listening and reminiscing. What an incredible year it was.
So, once a month on Twitter – and hopefully in the actual Social before the end of the year – we’re gonna party like it’s 1991!
(No Bryan Adams or ‘Size Of A Cow’ – guaranteed)
